What Is Udyam Registration?

Udyam Registration is the Government of India’s official system for recognising and registering Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). It was launched on 1 July 2020 by the Ministry of MSME, replacing the earlier Udyog Aadhaar (UAM) system.

When you register, your business receives a unique Udyam Registration Number (URN) — a 19-digit identifier in the format UDYAM-XX-00-0000000 — and an official Udyam Registration Certificate that is your gateway to every government MSME scheme, subsidy, and benefit.

As of early 2026, more than 7.51 crore enterprises have registered on the Udyam portal — one of the largest MSME registries in the world.

Who Can Register?

Any business qualifying as a Micro, Small, or Medium Enterprise under the MSMED Act can register — including:

  • Sole proprietorships and individual businesses
  • Partnership firms
  • Limited Liability Partnerships (LLPs)
  • Private and Public Limited Companies
  • Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs)
  • Cooperative Societies, Trusts, and NGOs

Both manufacturing and service businesses qualify. Traders — wholesale and retail — are now explicitly included following the Budget 2025 revisions.

MSME Classification Limits — Updated April 2025

The Union Budget 2025-26 revised MSME investment and turnover limits — effective 1 April 2025. These are the current thresholds:

Category Investment Limit Annual Turnover
Micro Enterprise Up to ₹2.5 crore Up to ₹10 crore
Small Enterprise Up to ₹25 crore Up to ₹100 crore
Medium Enterprise Up to ₹125 crore Up to ₹500 crore

⚠️ Important rule: Your business must satisfy both criteria — investment AND turnover — to be classified in a category. If either limit is exceeded, the business moves to the next higher category.

What Documents Do You Need?

This is where most people expect a long checklist. The reality is simpler than you think — there are no documents to upload.

  • Aadhaar Number — of the proprietor / managing partner / karta / authorised signatory
  • Mobile number linked to Aadhaar — for OTP verification
  • PAN Number — mandatory for companies, LLPs, cooperatives, trusts
  • GSTIN — only if your business is already GST-registered

The process is entirely paperless and based on self-declaration. Investment and turnover data is auto-fetched from the Income Tax and GST databases using your PAN and GSTIN.

Step-by-Step: How to Complete Zero Cost Udyam Registration Online

1
Go to the official portal

Open your browser and visit udyamregistration.gov.in — this is the only legitimate government portal. Do not register on any other website.

2
Select the correct registration option

Click “For New Entrepreneurs who are not Registered yet as MSME.” If you previously had Udyog Aadhaar (UAM) or EM-II, select the migration option instead.

3
Enter Aadhaar and verify OTP

Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number and name. An OTP is sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile. Enter it to verify identity against the UIDAI database.

4
PAN verification

Enter your organisation type and PAN. The system auto-verifies against the Income Tax database — this takes 30 seconds to 2 minutes.

5
Fill the registration form

Enter business name, address, activities (NIC codes), investment in plant/machinery, bank account details, and Date of Commencement (see FAQ below).

6
Submit and download your certificate

Submit the form. Your Udyam Registration Certificate is generated instantly. Download and save it. The certificate has no expiry date.

✅ The entire process takes 5–10 minutes. Certificate is issued instantly. Zero cost.

What Is “Date of Commencement” in Udyam Registration?

This is one of the most common questions asked by first-time registrants.

Date of Commencement is the date your business officially started operations — the day you first sold goods or provided services to customers. It is not the date you incorporated the company, obtained GST registration, or signed a lease.

For most small businesses, this is simply the date the shop opened, the workshop started production, or the first service was provided.

Why it matters: This date determines the classification period for your enterprise. It appears on your Udyam Certificate and is used by banks and government agencies to assess the age and history of your business when you apply for loans and schemes.

If you are unsure of the exact date, use the most accurate date you recall for when the business genuinely began commercial operations.

Udyam Registration is not just a formality. It is the single key that unlocks a significant set of financial protections and government benefits.

The Scam You Must Avoid

🚨 Warning — Fake Registration Websites

Search “Udyam Registration” on Google and you will find dozens of websites that look official. They have government-sounding names. Some even use “.in” domains. They offer to “help” you register — for a fee of ₹500 to ₹2,000.

These websites are private companies. They are not affiliated with the government in any way.

How to identify the only official portal:

  • URL must be exactly: udyamregistration.gov.in
  • The header reads “Government of India, Ministry of MSME”
  • There is no payment page anywhere in the process

If you have already paid a third party, your certificate may still be valid — but you paid unnecessarily.

Annual Update Requirement

Your Udyam Certificate never expires. However, you must update your financial data on the portal every year — specifically investment and turnover figures for the previous financial year.

This ensures your MSME category (Micro / Small / Medium) remains accurate and your scheme eligibility stays intact. The update process is also free and takes only a few minutes.

Key rule: One PAN = One Udyam Registration. You cannot file more than one registration for the same business. You can however add multiple activities, locations, and plants under one URN.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Udyam Registration mandatory?

It is voluntary. However, without registration your business is not officially recognised as an MSME and cannot access any scheme benefits — loans, subsidies, procurement preferences, or payment protections. In practical terms, it is essential for any serious business.

How long does MSME zero cost registration online take?

The online process takes 5 to 10 minutes. The certificate is issued instantly on the same portal with no waiting period.
